The Interior Architecture & Spatial Design program is focused on developing professional and design skills and an innovative approach to solving 3D (three dimensional) and spatial problems across a range of social and commercial contexts. Our Interior Architecture & Spatial Design degree will introduce you to creative practices, through studio projects informed by historical and contemporary design, current trends, social contexts and the relationships of other art and design areas to Interior Design. Many of the projects you will be working on have an industry or business focus to give you practical experience, ready for when you embark upon your career.

We will support you to achieve your career and study ambitions, as our main and absolute objective is to create competent graduates, able to respond perfectly to any relevant industry requirements, but mostly to provide them with the appropriate skills and knowledge to become leaders in the field by creating exceptional results.

You will graduate with a unique balance of critical, practical and creative skills, thanks to the opportunities you will be given to move between the other Art and Design courses and disciplines. There are also many art trips involved in the course, across and beyond Cyprus.

COURSE CONTENT

Our Interior Architecture & Spatial Design degree is a vibrant and creative course. There is a high demand for this expertise in the industry, with the regional expansion scheme, including public and private building plans, so you are in the perfect place to study this evolving discipline.

By joining the course, you will become part of a unique learning environment with very close and guided support from teaching tutors. Our tutors are experts in industry, many of whom run their own design practices and hold extensive links to the industry.

You will work with contemporary technologies and develop your own visual language, giving you the knowledge and confidence to design for a range of applications. Our design studio and technical workshops provide the environment for you to be innovative in your production of two and three-dimensional work. You will focus on aspects of design technology that can be applied to designing commercial, domestic and public living spaces, linking practical 3D projects to the theory you will learn.

STAGE 1 (FOUNDATION YEAR)

The 1^st year of study is mostly investigational, experimental and research based, in order to start defining the perspectives of the fields of specialization. Technical workshops will take place so you start developing the appropriate practical skills that will lead you to better understand your course specifications and values, and you will be introduced technically and conceptually to the course and to industry expectations.

When you successfully complete our 1^st year of study, you can proceed to the 2^ndyear of our Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Architecture & Spatial Design.

STAGE 2

During the 2^nd year of your studies you will learn how to research and apply established working practices concepts and principles through a variety of design tasks. Projects include all aspects of the design process including 3D experimentation visual language and technical considerations initiated through a briefing process and culminating in appropriate peer group presentations and assessment.

You will be introduced to the skills and knowledge required to use appropriate computer software as an aid to design. The production of two-dimensional ‘lay-out’ drawings is followed by the development of concepts and skills needed to generate three-dimensional models. You will be encouraged to be experimental in your approach employing a range 2D and 3D methods in a design process of idea generation and development editing and refinement.

This stage introduces the conditions and factors that unpin creative design activity from a creative philosophical and professional perspective. A survey of key landmarks in art and design history and theory will illuminate and define the role of the designer today. The professional practice context provides an insight into the nature and rational of design organizations and business as an integral component of the design process.

When you successfully complete our 2^nd year of study, you can proceed to the 3^rd year of our Bachelor’s Degree earning an HNC Diploma (BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Art and Design – Interior Design), as well. The HNC Diploma gives you the opportunity (a) to cash it in and earn a Diploma, (b), to continue for one more year and earn an HND (Higher National Diploma), (c) to continue your studies for two more years and earn a Bachelor’s Degree (from UON, University of Northampton) at our College.

Design Project 1 (40 Credits)

Module code: 3DD1005
This module enables students to research and apply established working practices concepts and principles through a variety of design tasks. Projects include all aspects of the design process including 3D experimentation visual language and technical considerations initiated through a briefing process and culminating in appropriate peer group presentations and assessment.

3D Computer Aided Design 1 (20 Credits)

Module code: 3DD1021

This module provides the student with an introduction to the skills and knowledge required to use appropriate computer software as an aid to design. Students will appreciate the difference in approach between manual and computer aided design (CAD) having completed this module. The production of two-dimensional ‘lay-out’ drawings is followed by the development of concepts and skills needed to generate three-dimensional models. These three dimensional models will be used to explore aspects of spatial awareness within a built environment context. This unit concentrates on CAD using software for the production of two-dimensional plans for interior design. Industry standard layer conventions libraries symbols and system procedures will be used to speed up the drawing process.

Design, Construction and Detailing 1 (40 Credits)

Module code: 3DD1061

The purpose of this module is to introduce design and construction principles and technologies that relate to architectural and spatial design. Specific focus will be aimed at developing an understanding of construction detailing at a human scale. Students will be introduced to the drawing conventions associated with the subject area. This module is design project led where students will be encouraged to be experimental in their approach employing a range 2D and 3D methods in a design process of idea generation and development editing and refinement.

Design Theory Context and Practice 1 (20 Credits)

Module code: 3DD1062

This module provides an introduction to the conditions and factors that unpin creative design activity from a creative philosophical and professional perspective. The practice of 3D design requires specific and general knowledge in various related subjects. Part of this is the recognition understanding and articulation of the artistic social historic and economic factors involved in the design process. A survey of key landmarks in art and design history and theory will illuminate and define the role of the designer in today’s society. The professional practice context provides an insight into the nature and rational of design organisations and business as an integral component of the design process.

STAGE 3

The 3^rdyear of your study, enables you to research integrate apply and develop established working practice concepts and principles through a variety of design based projects which involves research analysis application and presentation of realistic design proposals through practically orientated projects.

At this stage you will be provided with a broad understanding of software combined with understanding of building structures. It will aim to develop your knowledge of computer use and provide a starting point for the further exploration of digital design. Three dimensional models will be used to explore aspects of spatial awareness within a built environmental context.

You will boost further your knowledge of construction and material technology by engaging with complex three-dimensional design problems covering architectural interventions installations and product design. The design approach will continue to be through observation and making learning from precedent.

During the 3^rd year of your studies, you will have the opportunity to undertake some of your projects at the University of Northampton (UoN) for a certain period (this is optional).

When you successfully complete our 3^rd year of study, you can proceed to the 4^th and final year of our Bachelor’s Degree.

This module enables second year students to research integrate apply and develop established working practice concepts and principles through a variety of design based projects. Project work reflects professional design practice and involves research analysis application and presentation of realistic design proposals through practically orientated projects.

3D Computer Aided Design 2 (20 Credits)

Module code: 3DD2029

Computer aided design has become the tool that the industry uses to design and present ideas. An ability to use computers and the various types of software will make the learner more employable. This module will provide students with a broad understanding of software combined with understanding of building structures. It will aim to develop their knowledge of computer use and provide a starting point for the further exploration of digital design. Three dimensional models will be used to explore aspects of spatial awareness within a built environmental context.

Design, Construction and Detailing 2 (40 Credits)

Module code: 3DD2070

This module builds on the knowledge gained in module Design Construction and Detailing 1. You will further your knowledge of construction and material technology by engaging with complex three dimensional design problems covering architectural interventions installations and product design. The design approach will continue to be through observation and making learning from precedent. Assignment outcomes will link directly to subject areas and design contexts covered in the Design Project 2 module.

Design Theory Context and Practice 2 (20 Credits)

Module code: 3DD2071

Today’s designers need to have more than an understanding of the social economic and cultural context of their work and have the ability and confidence to contribute ideas and be prepared to move design forward. This can be achieved not only through their design work but by contributing to the development in a variety of other ways e.g. through the way they research and organise their work professionally; ideas and contribution to debates; through publications conferences and active participation in organizations. The purpose of this module is to encourage the development of personal research interests and lays the ground work for the Level 6 Dissertation in encouraging students to independently identifying suitable research subjects sources and develop a research methodology.

STAGE 4

The final year enables the consolidation development and application of skills knowledge and vocabulary gained in previous years of study in preparation for the Final Major Project. The topic will encourage you to define and solve technical aesthetic and/or stylistic elements of design problems in a commercially real context and to fully realize a design solution in two and three dimensions. Typically, the project brief will be set or refereed by an external agency such as a live client or a design competition.

Another major purpose of final year student is to research integrate apply and develop an established working practice concepts and design principles through a self-generated and managed interior architectural and spatial design project. Projects may reflect your individual interest and experiences through the course. You are expected to produce your own brief generate your own research program utilizing internal and industry based research sources. This stage also consists of two linked assignments the Feasibility Report and the Detailed and Technical Design Portfolio.

You will also need to prepare the production of a 5000-word research topic in the form of a dissertation. The selected topic is negotiated through tutorials to determine its relevance to contextual Interiors issues. The dissertation will develop academic skills on culturally related issues.

When you successfully complete the 4^th (final year), you will earn a BA (Hons) in Interior Architecture & Spatial Design. You will become a professional designer and fully equipped to succeed in the related industries. You will be fully prepared to lead in the field since the main target of our course, is to create graduates capable of becoming unique and exceptional.

Minor Design Project (20 Credits)

Module code: 3DD3022

This module enables the consolidation development and application of skills knowledge and vocabulary gained in levels 4 and 5 in preparation for the Final Major Project. The topic will encourage students to define and solve technical aesthetic and/or stylistic elements of design problems in a commercially real context and to fully realise a design solution in two and three dimensions. Typically the project brief will be set or refereed by an external agency such as a live client or the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) design competition.

Final Major Project (80 Credits)

Module code: 3DD3042

The purpose of this module is to enable final year students to research integrate apply and develop an established working practice concepts and design principles through a self-generated and managed interior architectural and spatial design project. Projects may reflect the student’s individual interest and experiences through the course. Students are expected to produce their own brief generate their own research programme utilising internal and industry based research sources. This module consists of two linked assignments the Feasibility Report and the Detailed and Technical Design Portfolio.

Dissertation (20 Credits)

Module code: 3DD4006

This 20 credit module requires the production of a 5000 word research topic in the form of a dissertation. The selected topic is negotiated through tutorials to determine it’s relevance to contextual Interiors issues. The document will present the students’ skill at written communication: individual research analysis and development; the exploitation of a range of knowledge bases and the capacity to present ideas. It should also utilise their organisational skills in the preparation and scheduling of research and tutorials. The dissertation will develop academic skills on culturally related issues. It will present students with the opportunity to develop further the application of theoretical principles. It offers individual choice and an opportunity for more extensive research.

METHOD OF TEACHING

We take a range of approaches to teaching, to help you learn in the best way for you. You will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, workshop-based sessions and one-to-one tutorials. You will get feedback throughout the year, orally, in writing and online. In addition to the programme requirements, you will have the opportunity to attend any other specialization course (Fashion, Graphic etc.) workshop you want, at no additional charge.

ASSESSMENTS

You will be assessed through a mixture of studio-based design critiques and written assessments. Through your final year you will be assessed continually, culminating in a major exhibition of your design work.

Students who do not complete the Honours Degree will be eligible for an Ordinary Degree in the named subject upon successful completion of a minimum of 60 Level 6 credits. These can be from any Level 6 modules, whether identified as compulsory or designated.

THE DEGREE SHOW

Final year students display their work at the annual Degree Show at both our Freshart Campuses, in Limassol and Paphos, and some will be selected to participate in an external interior design exhibition venue.

In your final year, you will have the considerable opportunity to exhibit your work at a professional level and live the first experience of being a professional designer.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Year 1 entry:

To enter year 1 of the course (of a 4-year course) applicants are expected to send an online portfolio and to have:

2 GCE A’ Levels at a minimum grade C, one must be from the Art & Design field.

School Leaving Certificate (Apolytirion) overall grade 16 or above.

We also value professional experience and alternative qualifications accordingly, where necessary.

Online Portfolio Guidance

Year 2 or 3 entry:

Students with a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design (FAD) or a relevant HND with a suitable profile of achievement may be admitted into year two or three, accordingly.

A committee of specialist staff will review applications and might invite you for an interview (international students may be interviewed over Skype). A member of our academic team will discuss about your portfolio with you, your specialized skills, course details and your own expectations, and will also be ready to answer any questions you may have.

If you would like to apply for a full-time or a part-time study, distance or online learning, for undergraduate study, BA, HND, HNC, Foundation, please apply directly to the College.

Supporting documents for undergraduate courses

Please include the following documents with your completed application form:

Details of your English Language competence, for example, GCSE, Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOFEL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) tests or equivalent.
Certified copies of your school certificates and any other relevant qualifications. A certified copy is a photocopy that has an original, official stamp of your school, college or university on it.
At least one reference.

You can apply for any course at any time before the course starts. The normal closing date for applications is 15^th of May. Late applications are accepted but are not guaranteed the same level of consideration as applications made before 15^th of May.

Application Review and Decision

We will normally provide applicants with a decision within 30 days of the closing date. In case this should take longer, you will be notified.

If your application is successful and you are not required to attend an interview, you will receive a formal offer letter and further information about your course.

Changing my course once I have applied

You can change your course if you would like to, as long as you meet the entry requirements for the new course and there are places available. If the new course requires an interview you will need to attend this before being offered a place. You will have to submit your request to change your course in writing and send it by email to the admissions office.

APPLYING FOR DIRECT ENTRY INTO THE SECOND OR THIRD YEAR OF A COURSE

If you have completed academic studies that are equivalent to the first or second year of the course you are applying for, it may be possible to enter the course at the second or third year. You will need to provide a transcript or list of modules including how many credits they are worth. The Admissions Tutor will then consider the application.

PART-TIME STUDY

A lot of our courses can be completed part-time. Therefore, you can fit your studies around your life and we will make sure we shape your schedule based on your time availability. The majority of part-time courses start in October. Please apply as soon as possible to ensure we have your details before your course starts.
